How to cook it

  1. Heat the oven to 375F and bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

  2. Warm the olive oil in a skillet and brown the beef and sausage with the onion and garlic, breaking up the meat, about 8 minutes.

  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, season with salt, and simmer 15 minutes.

  4. Cook the lasagna noodles until just pliable, about 8 minutes, then drain.

  5. Mix the ricotta with the egg, half the parmesan, and the basil.

  6. Layer sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella in a baking dish, repeating for three layers and finishing with sauce and the remaining cheeses.

  7. Cover with foil and bake 25 minutes, then uncover and bake until bubbling and golden, about 20 minutes more.

  8. Let the lasagna rest 15 minutes before slicing.
