Blister the poblano over an open flame or under a broiler until charred, then peel, seed, and cut it into thin strips (rajas).

Saute the onion in the butter for 2 minutes, then add most of the corn kernels and cook 3 minutes.

Blend the cooked corn with the milk until smooth, then strain back into the pot.

Simmer 10 minutes, stirring often, until it thickens slightly.

Stir in the reserved whole kernels and the poblano strips just before serving.
