How to cook it
-
Whisk the eggs, milk and sugar together in a shallow dish wide enough to hold a slice of the shokupan.
-
Lay the thick slices in the custard and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes per side, pressing gently now and then, until the bread has absorbed nearly all the liquid.
-
Melt half the butter in a nonstick skillet over medium low heat.
-
Fry the soaked slices for 4 to 5 minutes per side, until deep golden and just set in the center, adding the rest of the butter as needed.
-
Drizzle with the honey and serve warm, the bread three centimeters thick and soaked all the way through, a genuinely different dish from its French and German cousins.
