Turkey Chili is American home cooking, eaten at lunch and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.

How to cook it
-
Heat the oil in a large pot over medium-high heat, add the ground turkey and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until no pink remains. The 93% lean pack is the one to buy here; the 85% kind carries much more fat.
-
Add the onion, bell pepper and garlic and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, oregano and salt and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
-
Pour in the tomatoes with their juice, the drained beans and the broth. Low-sodium broth is a good choice since the beans and tomatoes already bring salt. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, partly covered, for 25 minutes, stirring now and then, until thick.
-
Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving. Shredded cheese, sour cream and sliced green onions are optional toppings and are not counted in the nutrition here, so go easy on them if anyone at the table is watching saturated fat.

A American dinner is a plate rather than a single dish. These are the courses that normally sit beside Turkey Chili, read from the same composition Dinejot builds a real meal from.
