How to cook it

Core the cabbage and simmer it whole in a large pot of boiling water until the leaves soften enough to peel off, about 8 minutes, then separate 12 large leaves.

Mix the beef mince, raw rice, diced onion, egg, salt, and pepper in a bowl.

Place a portion of the filling in the center of each cabbage leaf, fold in the sides, and roll into a neat parcel.

Heat the oven to 350F and spread a little tomato sauce in the base of a baking dish.

Arrange the rolls seam side down, pour over the remaining tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, and cover with foil.

Bake until the rice is tender and the rolls are cooked through, about 75 minutes.
