Print or share this recipe
Godhumai Rava Upma (Broken Wheat Upma) is South Indian home cooking, eaten at breakfast and dinner. On the plate it is the dish at the centre. Below is what usually sits beside it, what it does and does not contain, and what else to cook once you have made it.
Ingredients
The quantities follow this count.
How to cook it
-
Dry roast the broken wheat (samba godhumai rava) in a kadai on medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring, until it smells toasty. Tip it onto a plate.
-
Heat the oil in the same kadai and add the mustard seeds. When they splutter, add the urad dal and chana dal and fry until golden, then the curry leaves, green chilies and ginger.
-
Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, then the carrot, finely chopped beans and peas with the salt, and stir for 2 minutes.
-
Pour in the water and bring it to a rolling boil. Lower the heat and add the roasted wheat in a slow stream, stirring all the time so no lumps form.
-
Cover and cook on low heat for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring once halfway, until the water is absorbed and the grains are soft. Let it rest 5 minutes with the lid on, fluff it with a fork and scatter the coriander leaves.
-
Serve it hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney, the same way you would serve rava upma.
Serve it with
