Rinse the basmati rice in several changes of water until it runs clear, then soak 15 minutes and drain.

Melt the ghee in a pot over medium heat and add the cardamom pods and cinnamon stick, stirring 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add the drained rice and stir gently for 1 minute to coat every grain in the ghee.

Pour in the water and salt, bring to a boil, then cover, reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook 12 minutes.
