How to cook it

  1. Rinse the toor dal and pressure cook it with the water and turmeric until soft, about 4 whistles, then mash lightly smooth.

  2. Heat the oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, peanuts, and dried red chilies, frying until the peanuts turn golden.

  3. Add the curry leaves, then stir in the goda masala for a few seconds until fragrant.

  4. Pour the cooked dal into the pan along with the tamarind pulp, jaggery, grated coconut, and salt, and simmer for 10 minutes so the flavors come together.

  5. Adjust the consistency with hot water to a pourable curry, finish with cilantro, and serve hot with rice or bhakri.
